Greetings Bitches. As I am slowly become more obsessed with roller derby than my ferocious kitty, Captain Beaumont Bones, I might as well document my grueling encounters with the track, girls, bruises, drunk fests, and anything else that life brings my way. It's 2011. Let's get this shit going.

Note: Over that past two months i have thought long and hard of what i want. Sure, i want to be an awesome skater, but i also want a rockin’ body. When ESPN’s Body issue came out and i saw how lean Suzy Hotrod is, i about shit my pants. I realized that is what i want. I want to be that skater who is top in the derby community, recognized nationally and has a killer body and discipline to show for it. Sure, I am only in my rookie year, but i don’t plan to quit anytime soon.  So in the past two months i have become a gym rat. Two hours almost every day alternating my muscle groups. Rid my diet of soda, junk food, fast food (though i hardly ever eat it), sugars and other bad things. Water and tea and almond milk is what i have been drinking. Not only do i feel great but i love the constant feeling of being sore.  I know most girls just play the sport out of fun but i want this. i want this bad.

    1. Continue to work out on off derby days. I know that my hard work will pay off.
    2. Get lower. Skate faster.
    3. Hit harder.
    4. Get better at jamming.
    5. Fancier footwork.

So, I can do crossovers, I’m just not completely comfortable with them. If I think I’m loosing my balance, I stop instead of trying to work on correcting that.

Do wheels have a factor in this? Should I get grippier ones? Right now I’m rolling on poison atoms. And what exactly does grippier wheels mean?

    Thanks loves!
    Jen

    hey!

Oscar here from Steel City. Wheels and the person’s weight have a HUGE factor in how you skate, along with type of floor you are on. Poison’s are pretty much 84a. They are good on any surface, though primarily outdoor, sportcourt and dirty wood.  It’s more of a wheel to use when you don’t know what kind of wheel to use (for traveling, etc.) You on the other hand need a hard wheel. I weigh 185lbs and skate on about a 95ish. Radar Tuners Orange to be exact. A lot of the heavier girls need a harder wheel like an atom lowboy or fugitive.  I also like wider wheels that narrow (mid).  It’s a lot on preference, if you know girls that skate as them if you can borrow wheels. It saves you time and money in the long run.

oh and p.s. if you haven’t loosened your trucks yet, do it. it’ll make cross overs a hell of a lot easier.

It’s not like i was even having a bad day. Well, maybe i did not sleep well. I can blame the asshole that was pretty much yelling outside my living room window at 2 something in the morning. That’s the downfall of this apartment. When the windows are open, i can hear your conversation from three stories up. It’s legit. Also, i guess it doesn’t help that about 3 doors down is a dive bar, full of pittsburgh’s finest (white trash).

So needless to say, i woke up later than expected. My hair was a friz ball ( it was my day not to wash it, though. ) and there was a nest forming underneath it all.

Work was okay. I think i got everything done that i needed to do. I swear, time flies when there is shit to be done. Which is why i wish i could just do all visual work and not have to worry about customers, which is why i think a corporate setting is for me.

I had a phone call that i’m still wondering if it went okay or not. That’s up in the air. I HATE talking on the phone, unless i know what i am talking about. Catch me in the air, i am fucked.

All of this leads to practice this evening. Christ. i haven’t been on my skates in literally two weeks ( week 1: baby toe almost breakage/sprain/whatever & bruised ass bone, week 2: week off for floor resurfacing) and add that with the new sticky floor, you have a mess. I just get so frustrated sometimes, which then makes me hesitant on things. I couldn’t  give a hit all night, etc., etc., etc.

Call me a DEB. I dare you, well, no i don’t dare you, i’ll let you. I am a DEB tonight.

so here we are bad news bear oscar.

Needless to say, i hope things look bright in my future. with more money and free time and shit. i need it and i deserve it.

Did i mention that i became a teamed skater? Because I DID!!

I can’t believe that a small thought of evening joining a roller derby team has turned into actually being on a team. I like to this it’s one of my biggest accomplishments of life so far. It pays off to stick with what you love.

Currently i’m sporting a bruised ass bone. Or atleast i think it’s bruised. It hurts when i sit in different positions, but i don’t think it’s broken. I guess i know now why some girls where ass pads.

…. not sure if i will actually give in and wear them. Christ, i’m a fashion girl, i need to stay fashionable on and off the track.
